BRE Environmental Assessment Method

Many clients want to protect their building asset and do so by embarking on a formal sustainability or health and well-being rating system. This can attract higher rent yields, market demand and ultimately add more value than non-related equivalents. Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognized measures of a building's environmental performance. A BREEAM assessment uses recognized measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

LIDL, Macroom

Lidl contacted Green Energy Solutions requesting an evaluation of their construction specification manual to determine how compliant their building was to meet BREEAM certification. Through this, Green Energy Solutions could identify areas where it can be improved upon to achieve BREEAM credits and therefore a higher certification level. The result of this work would not only benefit LIDL Macroom but create a framework to assess the viability of BREEAM for each new project moving forward.

Green Energy Solutions have helped LIDL in highlighting the key issues impacting the sustainability rating and have given guidance. This has included solutions to key issues such as transportation links, land use and habitat. Current practices have been assessed in terms of materials used, construction methodology, waste management and many others. Energy performance was measured and ideas put forward as to how to improve were put forward.

This project is on-going and is expected to receive a certification of 'good' on the BREEAM benchmark rating scale.
